Merchant Accounts for moving companies

The moving industry is crucial, with a market size of over $18 billion. With tens of thousands of moving companies transporting goods, the need to process credit cards and other payment options is clear.

Unfortunately, many banks and credit card processors consider moving and transportation companies to be “high risk” and are not willing to provide commercial services to them.

Sami Payments, on the other hand, prides itself on offering business services to moving and transportation companies. We value the services provided by all types of companies within the industry, including those that ship merchandise, transport various items, enable residential moves, and more.

Can I charge my clients' credit card before the move occurs? Is there a maximum limit on the size of the transaction?

Each Merchant Account is approved based on the specific needs of your company. However, generally speaking, the best practice is to only charge the customer's credit or debit card as close to moving day as possible. Charging a card early results in unnecessary chargebacks on the customer's credit card in the event of a last-minute change by the customer. Regarding transaction sizes, we allow you to tell us how much your company's services cost in your Merchant Account application. When an insurer reviews your company's merchant services request, they will review it with that transaction limit in mind. There is no fixed maximum transaction limit for the moving and transportation industry as a whole.

Why do banks and credit card processors consider my moving or transportation business high risk?

Most credit card processors consider the moving and transportation industries too high risk to support for any of four reasons:

  1. Moving companies and transportation services offer personalized, unique, and high-priced items.  For example, even the average office move or small boat transportation involves a custom price proposal ranging from thousands to tens of thousands of dollars. One-time sales with high-value credit cards are the most prone to so-called "friendly fraud," where customers use the service but return it to try to get it for free.
  2. Moving or transporting goods can be risky. Things break down in the normal course of a move, or a customer's goods are not delivered exactly in the precise manner in which they were planned. Unfortunately, this leaves more room for disputes from customers, creating the risk of more chargebacks.
  3. Even those movers that are affiliated with major national moving chains typically operate on a local or franchise model. These are small or medium-sized businesses, with significant exposure to chargeback liability and often without the resources to fulfill orders in the event of a disaster.
  4. Carriers typically accept credit card payments through a virtual terminal, over the phone. Because this method of card acceptance is not face-to-face, it is also subject to more customer fraud than retail transactions.

Types of Moving and Transportation Merchant Accounts

Sami Payments offers a full range of Merchant Accounts for moving companies, auto transporters and other companies in the transportation industry. These include:

  • Retail

  • Mobile

  • Virtual terminal

  • e-Commerce

Retail payments

A Retail Merchant Account for Movers and Haulers allows your business to accept face-to-face credit card payments through a traditional credit card machine or point-of-sale system.

These are suitable for businesses that primarily accept payments in person at their store. Due to the nature of the in-person transaction, retail credit card payments have lower rates of chargebacks and fraud and therefore these Merchant Accounts receive the lowest price.

Mobile payments

Common in the moving industry, mobile Merchant Accounts allow your company to accept payments in person through a reader that connects to your employees' mobile phone or iPad.

Moving or transportation companies that accept credit card payments at the customer's location are ideal for a mobile Merchant Account. Because payments are accepted in person, the risk of fraud and chargebacks is lower and, as a result, these Merchant Accounts are priced similarly to retail.

Virtual terminal payments

A virtual terminal or payment gateway Merchant Account allows businesses to accept payments over the phone, by mail, or entered into a regular computer without external equipment.

This is ideal for moving companies and shippers who prefer to accept credit card payments over the phone, or who use a robust CRM system and prefer to have their payments automatically integrated with that CRM system.
